Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of supporting High Commissioners, CEOs, founders, senior leaders, and Australian business owners across a wide range of sectors. While each has had their own unique rhythm and quirks (#iykyk), one thing has remained consistent: the value I bring always shows up in four key areas.
1. Understanding the big picture
I can’t support someone in the best way unless I understand where they’re headed. Their “north star” becomes my compass. It helps me divide time wisely, shape the week around priorities, and structure their calendar with intention. Strategic support starts with knowing the why behind every task.
2. Speed of execution and priority identification
These two go hand in hand. With their bigger picture as my compass, I can identify what matters most and get it moving, fast. My approach blends strategic foresight with sharp execution: I prioritise meeting prep, set discipline around when and how we meet, ask smart questions, and often come with a recommendation in my back pocket to expedite a decision. It’s how I bring real bang for buck, especially when I work to a retainer.
3. Stakeholder confidence
This is where the magic happens and something I love most about being an EA. I take the time to understand to (virtually) connect with my clients’ networks – understanding their voices, values and contributions. I’m an extension of them so I blend warm professionalism and personalised language with clear directives and outcomes. I build trust on their behalf by using “we” and “us” language deliberately – when I support someone, we operate as one team.
4. Protect and promote
What does this concept look like in practice? I protect my clients’ time to avoid overwhelm and to give them the space to focus on what really matters – the strategic work only they can do. Their schedule is structured to balance external facing pieces with time at the desk. I protect them against difficult or awkward moments, often stepping in to offer an alternative. I promote my clients by ensuring we always lead with the right tone and same brand voice. I support them to show up engaged and informed.
